10 Steps To Take After The Job Interview (Plus a Bonus Unexpected Step)
You got the Dietetic Job Interview. What are your next steps after the job interview?
You applied for the job with a fantastic resume. Your resume stood out from the rest and you got an interview. You prepared for the dietetic job interview and completed it. Now what?
The employer or hiring manager may have stated in the interview about the next steps, such as contacting you in a few days. Don’t just wait around. Let the employer know you really want the job and you will go the extra mile to get it.
Here are 10 Proactive Steps to Take After the Dietetic Interview*.
- Congratulate yourself. Congratulate yourself on what went well. It’s important to take a moment and be kind to yourself. You worked hard preparing for that interview.
- Send a thank you note. Send the interview panel an email or note to thank them for their time. A simple note shows interest, respect, and extra care. Yes, you need to do it even if it feels like too much. It really is expected by hiring managers. It shows interest. It also allows you to summarize what you put in your original cover letter that accompanied your resume. The them why you are a perfect fit and what your connection is to the job and the company.
- Reflect. Reflect on the interview and what you did well and what you could improve upon. Write it down as this will help for your next interview.
- Is this a good fit? Reflect on whether you would actually like the job. This is good to note because now you’ve met with the hiring manager/employer, seen what the company culture will be like, and heard a more detailed description of what the job entails.
- Compensation. Consider what you’d like to negotiate for your pay, benefits, etc. Now that you’ve heard what they are offering, you can determine how you would like to proceed with your needs and the best strategy for negotiation.
- Prepare for the interview #2. Start to prepare for the next round of interviews. Many companies have multiple rounds. If you’ve just completed the first round, continue to practice and prepare for the next round.
- Be patient. This is the hardest part. Waiting is not easy and hiring managers/employers have multiple candidates to interview over the course of a few days or even weeks.
- Call back. If you haven’t heard anything, call for feedback within about two weeks after the interview.
- Stay connected, even if you don't get this job. If you don’t get the job, thank the interviewers for their time and consideration. If you are still interested in working for their company, let them know you would like to stay on their radar for future opportunities.
- BONUS STEP - Job notification list. Inquire if there is a job notification list to be put on so you get email notifications when new positions open up.
