The VA Pacific Islands Health Care System

Katie Schimmelpfenning, RD shares her experience working as a remote dietitian for the VA.

"I loved my experience at the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System and would highly recommend working there. The remote work allowed me to connect with Veterans across the Hawaiian Islands, Saipan, American Samoa, and Guam.

I worked for the Veteran Affairs (VA) Pacific Islands Health Care System on Oahu and loved my schedule, co-workers, and patients.

I worked four ten-hour shifts per week; three of the four days were work-from-home remote work. I noticed that I had higher attendance on my virtual appointment days. Both the veterans and I preferred the virtual connection. No traffic or parking issues to deal with!”

6 Tips for finding remote opportunities

As much as the availability of remote dietitian jobs is growing, the competition is fierce! How to stay in the game? Follow these tips:

1. Set your alerts - Set up an alert for remote jobs right here on Nutrition Jobs. You’ll be able to review new jobs the moment that they’re posted and apply right away.

2. Use many search terms - Not all roles posted are for a “registered dietitian.” You might see opportunities for registered dietitians in remote roles, listed as:

  • Health Coach
  • Program Manager
  • Nutritionist
  • Health Educator
  • Nutrition Coach
  • Dietitian Nutritionist
  • Wellness Coach
  • Wellness Dietitian
  • Wellness Nutritionist
  • Health Partner

3. Check your spelling - Registered dietitian, the preferred spelling for most RDs, isn’t always what is posted. Be sure to search for “dietician” job postings as well.

4. Network - Your dream job might be about to open…but never gets posted. Many jobs are filled through networking rather than being publicly posted.

Dietitian Collaborations to Boost Your Career.

5. Keep your resume up to date - When you see your dream job posted, you’re going to want to be able to submit your application right away. If you need to pause and update it (not to mention spell-check it), your application will quickly get lower and lower in the virtual pile.

Update your resume and LinkedIn profile today so that you’re always ready! Check out my courses for guidance on making your resume shine!

6. Keep asking questions - If a current or future job is currently an in-person role, ask if you can have the opportunity to work remotely part of the time. Knock your supervisor’s socks off with your work and then ask to go fully remote. Here are a few ideas for how to be indispensable at work: Ways To Become Indispensable At Work As a Dietitian.

7. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter: When applying for remote jobs, highlight any previous experience you have working remotely. Emphasize skills that make you a great remote worker, such as self-motivation, organization, and strong and consistent communication skills. Also include any technology skills that remote workers typically use, such as Slack, Trello, or Zoom, or more.

Or if you get an interview for an in-person role, ask if there might be flexibility to work remotely in the future.

Takeaways

More registered dietitians are seeking the flexibility of remote work without sacrificing the benefits that come with traditional employment. From paid leaves to health insurances, being an employee can offer a sense of stability.

There are a growing number of companies, traditional and start-ups, that have hired dietitians for remote roles. Although these companies might not always have immediate openings, keeping connected with them and maintaining an updated resume and LinkedIn profile could open doors to your dream remote job.

Additionally, diversifying your job search terms, networking, and expressing an interest in remote opportunities even in traditional roles can increase your chances of landing a work-from-home RD position. We can't wait to hear what new job you land!
