Dietetic Career Spotlight on Amy Gorin, Master The Media + Plant Based with Amy

Meet Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, an amazing media dietitian who has taught me so much about being a spokesperson and getting my name published in the media. She originally shared her career path with NutritionJobs back in 2017. In just 4 years, her career continues to expand tremendously. For example, she does about 10-12 media interviews weekly in addition to her regular gigs! Talk about impressive and encouraging. Amy is also very giving with her expert advice and started a successful company, Master the Media. Check out Amy’s career path and get ready to be inspired. - Sarah

What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?
I’ve always been interested in working with food—I started making my own recipes (mind you, not very good ones back then!) when I was a kid. But my interest in nutrition really took off during the beginning of my first career, when I was an editorial assistant in the nutrition department of Prevention. I remember spending hours on the phone with a nutrition researcher who patiently explained the nuances of EPA and DHA omega-3s to me. When I got off the phone, I thought, “I want to be able to understand this in minutes, not hours.” That’s when I started looking into going back to school to become a registered dietitian. It took me about seven years, all while working full-time as a magazine editor, but I did it.

Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?
There is no typical day, and that’s what I love the most! I’ll usually spend the morning replying to e-mails, and then it’s off to the “real” work. On any particular day, that could be writing a freelance article for Everyday Health or Food Network, completing media interviews sites like U.S. News and Women’s Health, developing or photographing recipes for a food client, or working with my students in the Master the Media Coaching Program that I run. I tend to get restless very easily, so I love that no two days are the same!

How did you get your current job in dietetics?
I knew that I wanted to combine my love of media and nutrition. When I became a registered dietitian, I began reaching out to editors I knew and began securing freelance writing gigs. Then I started connecting with food companies I love, and that’s how I began consulting and doing spokesperson and content creation work for brands. The more and more I got out there, the more reporters started reaching out to me, and now I do about 10 to 12 media interviews a week. And from there, the concept of the Master the Media Coaching program was conceived to help fellow health professionals get their names in the news. So everything happened very organically.

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
I’ve always loved writing and art—in fact, I had the hardest time deciding whether to major in fine arts or journalism. So I got degrees in both! I love that I now get to write every day and also get to be creative with recipe development and food photography.

In nutrition school, we don’t get taught any business skills, so I learned those along the way. Fortunately, I work in a field where everyone is willing to help each other. So I’ve learned a ton about entrepreneurship, legal stuff, and taxes!

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Don’t be afraid to go for your dream job. I often hear from other dietitians that they think the communications side of our field is already too saturated. But it’s not! There’s space for all of us, as we all have different niches and skillsets.

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what
would it be?
Coffee!
