How To Market Yourself as a Dietitian for Opportunity
I seem to get flooded with tips on how to market my business (I subscribe to so many newsletters!). It's all helpful, especially to remind me that I need to keep marketing my business in unique ways to capture the attention of new customers.
But you can be in the business of marketing YOU. Not just your business. You are unique, your skills are unique and different from other dietitians, a snowflake amongst dietitians. How you run your business or how you show up at work is unique. You need to spell that out so that people will want to work or collaborate with you.
Should Your Market Yourself if You Are in a Traditional Job as a Dietitian?
In short, yes! Always market your skills, services, and offerings.
But you might be thinking that marketing is just for dietitians who need more clients, who are in business for themselves, who are trying to attract more customers or patients.
Marketing your skills and offerings isn't just for dietitian entrepreneurs. Even if you are a clinical dietitian at the local hospital, you need to market your expertise.
Show people what you can do and what you are good at. Opportunity comes from many angles. Be there to attract and receive the the opportunities.
Whether you are in a traditional job, or in an alternative job, or are a dietitian entrepreneur, you need to market yourself.

Why You Should Market Yourself
- Attract collaborations with other dietitians - Working with others on a project or an event can elevate both of you and your businesses with more "traffic". Because I talked a lot of about marketing my business, I was asked to write a chapter in a textbook* on the topic!
- Gain more authority at work - People don't know what they don't know. You need to tell them! Telling people what you are good at might get you invited to speak (for an honorarium!) or sit on a special committee.
- Attract opportunity - You may love your job right now but what if you got offered an even better opportunity because someone noticed your signature skills.
Tips to Market Yourself Right Now
- Your LinkedIn Headline - Take a few minutes to update your LinkedIn Headline (even if you updated it a few months ago). That's the blurb just under your name. Include your keyword phrase (Nutrition Writer or Pediatric Dietitian Speaker or Immune Supporting Smoothie Master or Gut Health Menu Maker ..) and your signature achievement (Author of ..., Speaker at ..., Awarded ..., Specializing in ...).
- Comment on Posts in LinkedIn - The 1st line of your now improved Headline shows up just under your name when you post comments. Someone will notice your special service, your signature achievement, and will think of you when they need to hire or collaborate!
- Participate and Engage on Other Social Media - Participating on social media is a great way to market your name (for free!). I learn so much about what dietitians are doing and what services they are offering just by reading social media posts by others and the followers who comment. Have your username tell us about your niche, your side hustle, or your expertise.
- Ask for Recommendations on LinkedIn - Did you work on an event or project with someone? Ask them to write a Recommendation on LinkedIn that show your special skills. Ask your manager. Ask a co-worker. Try to have at least one recommendation for each job or project you worked on.
- Always Ask for Testimonials - If allowed in your state, ask your clients for a testimonial. How did you make them feel? What positive outcome resulted from working with you?
- Your Email Signature - Does your email signature still align with your signature service or offering? Include your specialty or a version of your LinkedIn Headline or LinkedIn URL.
- Include a Call To Action - (Thank you, Holly) This can show up anywhere, in conversations, in social media, LinkedIn. How can people work with you, collaborate with you, download a freebie, get a handout, invite you to speak, read your ebook, guest blog, guest speaker.
- Show Up as The Nutrition Expert - Posting evidence-based articles and content on social media accounts. Even on your own personal account. This shows your own community that you are an expert. - @luciasterpone.nutrition
