One of the biggest messages I try to emphasize when coaching dietitians is this: you are already uniquely qualified to be a powerful freelance writer. Brands are actively searching for experts who can translate nutrition science into clear, engaging, trustworthy content — and that is exactly what dietitians are trained to do.

Even though AI-generated information is everywhere, companies are becoming even more intentional about who they trust to create accurate health content. They’re prioritizing:

  • A real human perspective

  • Recognized nutrition credentials

  • Confident interpretation of research

  • Ethical communication that aligns with industry standards and best practices

  • A voice readers recognize as credible and safe

This is where you as a dietitian can stand out.

When I speak with content directors, editors, and brand managers, they’re clear: they want expert nutritionists, not generic writers. Melissa shares that the companies she works with don’t allow AI-generated articles at all.   • Working from home - with occasional coffee shop days

Melissa and I both believe LinkedIn is the most powerful platform for RDs seeking writing work. Here's why:

  • Your profile acts as a searchable writing portfolio

  • A few minutes per day can position you in front of decision-makers

A key note: always follow LinkedIn’s User Agreement when connecting and messaging. Keep your outreach friendly, professional, and aligned with platform etiquette.

Melissa’s highly effective, low-effort LinkedIn routine:

  • Post Monday through Friday (10–15 minutes)

  • Share your thoughts, insights, and relevant nutrition content

  • Highlight articles you wrote or were quoted in

  • Repost content from editors or brands with thoughtful commentary

  • Use your headline to describe exactly who you are (e.g., “Freelance Nutrition Writer | Registered Dietitian”)

It’s consistent visibility, not volume, that attracts new client inquiries.

How to Build a Client-Attracting LinkedIn Profile

To appear in searches for freelance writing, optimize:

1. Your Headline

Include terms like:

2. Your About Section

Explain who you help, what you write, and how you work.

3. Your Skills + Services

LinkedIn uses these fields to match you with editors and account managers seeking writers for specific needs.

  • Articles where you're quoted

This acts as a mini writing portfolio without needing a website.

Should Dietitians Worry About AI Replacing Writers?

I hear this concern a lot, and I want to share what the experts know: dietitians do not need to worry about AI taking over freelance writing.

In fact, the opposite is happening.

Many reputable media outlets and wellness brands now explicitly state in their content guidelines that they do not allow AI-generated writing. They want credentialed professionals who understand nutrition science, interpret research correctly, and can translate complex topics into safe, accurate, and human-centered information.

That’s something AI simply cannot replicate.

As dietitians, we bring:

  • Scientific training

  • Compassionate communication

  • Real-world clinical and counseling experience

  • The ability to contextualize nutrition in a meaningful, trustworthy way

Brands know this. Editors know this. Readers know this.

In fact, the growth of AI has actually increased the demand for RDs to review, edit, and fact-check content. Companies want the efficiency of content production, but they also want the accuracy and authority of a nutrition expert overseeing it.

So if AI has made you hesitant to pursue writing, let this be your permission slip: your expertise is still essential (and more in demand than ever).

Final Tips for Dietitians Wanting to Start Writing

If you’re thinking about stepping into freelance nutrition writing, here’s what I learned:

  • You do not need a huge portfolio, years of experience, or perfect confidence to begin. You just need a starting point and a willingness to show up consistently.
  • Begin by updating your LinkedIn profile so it reflects the kind of writing work you want to attract. Use writing-related keywords in your headline and About section so editors, brands, and account managers can actually find you.
  • Then, create one writing sample. Just one. It can live on your own blog, LinkedIn Articles, or even a simple Google Doc. Don’t wait until everything is perfect or polished. Start with what you have right now.
  • Focus on building genuine relationships - not cold pitching. Comment on posts, engage thoughtfully, and introduce yourself in a warm, human way. People hire writers they feel connected to and can trust.
  • Stay consistent on social media, especially on LinkedIn. Visibility compounds. Even 10 minutes a day builds familiarity, credibility, and confidence.
  • And don’t let the idea of a “proper” writing portfolio hold you back. Your early samples are allowed to be simple. They are stepping stones, not final products.
  • Above all, remember this: brands, editors, and companies actively need expert nutritionists to help them create accurate, trustworthy content. Your training matters. Your experience matters. And your voice is needed in a content landscape that is hungry for real expertise.
