Dietetic Career Spotlight: Katie Krejci, MS, RD, LD, IFNCP, Founder of The Homesteading RD

Meet Katie Krejci, MS, RD, LD, IFNCP, Founder of The Homesteading RD. Katie has turned her passion for homesteading and being self-sufficient into a side hustle. Through her social media content and Etsy shop she helps people learn how to grow their own food, develop healthy soil, raise animals the old-fashioned way, and live a toxin-free, simple life. I came across Katie’s instagram and was inspired by how she has merged her degree in dietetics with her vast experience of homesteading. Give her a follow on social media, you will not regret it! - Katie

What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?

What first attracted me to the field of nutrition is how fun all of the coursework looked, to be honest! When I was a freshman in college, I knew I wanted to pursue something in the health field, but I wasn't sure which avenue to go. One day, I sat down in my advisor's office and flipped through the massive book of all of the offered majors with the coursework listed under each one. When I came across dietetics, it really sparked my interest and I remember thinking "all of those sound like fun! I'll do that."

Company you are with now?

I am currently splitting my time between two jobs. First, I'm working as a functional dietitian 2-3 days a week at a virtual private practice called Miss Alexa Nutrition. Second, I run my own business called The Homesteading RD where I educate and inspire others to master health and self-sufficiency. I cover topics like growing your own food, food preservation methods, farm-to-table recipes, DIY projects, how to raise chickens, and more!

Your Job Title?

Integrative & Functional Dietitian. I'm not sure what to call myself for my own business... Blogger? Influencer? Entrepreneur? Business owner? All of the above?

Social Media:

A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?

This question is hard to answer because every day is different, which I love! Monday and Tuesdays, I typically catch up on my business to-do list, reach out to brands, film reels, or work on projects like creating courses or digital goods. Wednesday and Thursdays are my client days, then on Friday I write my weekly blog post for my website. I typically spend time on the weekends filming a few more reels or finishing any business stuff that didn't happen M-F. I'm trying to get better about keeping my weekends free, but it doesn't always happen :) This is a goal of mine!

How did you get your current job in dietetics?

In July, 2021 I decided to make the leap and quit my clinical job. I immediately enrolled in IFNA to pursue functional nutrition and completed the coursework in December, 2021. I started at Miss Alexa Nutrition in September 2021 and am still working there today - I love helping clients heal their bodies naturally by addressing the root cause! My business The Homesteading RD was born in August 2021. Being alone in my basement doing the IFNA coursework day after day, I realized something was missing. I missed the community aspect that I had at the hospital and educating people about things I'm passionate about. Plus, I sensed that there was a need in our community regarding self-sufficiency after the last few years of food shortages and price increases. I started to build up my Instagram account and found a lot of fulfillment and interest there! One day, I got an e-mail promoting how starting a blog is a good idea and I thought, "huh, why not!?" So, I launched my website www.thehomesteadingrd.com in December, 2021 and registered my business as an LLC in January, 2022. I now have +200K followers on social media and it's been such a joy to see how many people are interested in getting back to the basics and becoming more self-sufficient.

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?

I've always been creative, a lover of learning, analytical and organized. Those skills have certainly helped me along the way, especially with starting my own business. The skills that I have learned along the way are being comfortable in front of the camera, being adaptable, and knowing how to market and promote my business/nutrition message. Also, learning how to work with brands was a big learning curve for me as well.

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?

Stay true to yourself. I wasted WAY too many years of my career stuck in a clinical job that wasn't challenging me anymore and wasn't filling my cup as a dietitian. Once you find something you're passionate about, the success will follow.

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?

Something locally-produced like grass-finished beef, raw alpaca fiber, honey, or raw milk. Or, maybe help weeding my garden :)
