Dietitian Job Opportunities in Food Sustainability

Registered dietitians who are interested in sustainable nutrition and sustainable food systems in the food industry will be happy to know that there is a growing trend of dietitian job opportunities in the field.
The career opportunities related to sustainable food systems are on the rise, with a 10% job grown projected within agriculture, food systems, sustainability, natural resources, or the environment. Dietitians and dietetic technicians can also be a part of this growing career opportunity.
Sustainable nutrition focuses on the impact of food production and consumption on both environmental and human health, natural resources, sustainable practices, as well as strategies for current and future generations.
While traditional nutrition focuses solely on individual dietary needs, the limit on what we can do in our careers as dietitians does not exist! In this article, I chat with registered dietitian Mary Purdy, a leader in sustainable nutrition as well as other dietitians who are paving the way to make progress with the climate crisis.
Real quick: let’s discuss what an RD is and then we’ll dive into creating a dietitian career path in all things sustainability.
What is a registered dietitian?
A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a nutrition expert who has completed the necessary education, training and credentialing to provide safe, evidence-based advice on sustainable nutrition. They are able to assess individual dietary needs and recommend sustainable eating plans to improve health outcomes.
While typical job roles include working in a hospital, long-term care facility, or food service kitchen, nutrition professionals are finding more and more unique ways to make an impact in their role.
What types of sustainable nutrition jobs exist? A lot!
What is Sustainable Nutrition?
Interest in sustainable nutrition and sustainable diets is growing. It is now possible to find jobs that are 100% focused on sustainable nutrition. But it is also important to note that dietitians in any role can implement sustainable nutrition values.
Food sustainability refers to practices and systems that produce food in ways that are environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially equitable, ensuring that the food supply is stable and accessible for current and future generations.
Mary explains:
“I believe that ANY job can be a sustainable nutrition job. It's about seeing your role through a ‘climate-smart’ or environmental lens. This includes
- How we procure food
- What we advise patients to eat
- What is on the menu
- How we advocate
All of this can make a difference in helping to make our food system more sustainable.
I also believe that many organizations that are working to transform the food system could use a nutrition expert to bring in the health angle and connect those dots. This includes
- Navigating behavior change
- Offering creative and delicious strategies for making plant-forward meals more appealing
- Providing innovative ways to repurpose and reduce food waste
Especially with some education around sustainable food systems, any RD can pitch themselves as a consultant or adviser. It's also key to recognize that one of the components of sustainability is equity and worker welfare, so leveraging any skill sets and passions in that arena is also an important part of this field.”
If you work in food service, you can dictate what foods are served, and how/from where they are sourced. Let’s talk about that next!
How to implement sustainable nutrition at work as a dietitian
As nutrition sustainability is all about the practices and systems that produce food in ways that are environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially equitable, here are key aspects of food sustainability, along with examples that can get you thinking about how to implement this practice into your services as a dietitian:
Reducing Food Waste:
Strategies to minimize food loss and waste throughout the supply chain, from production to consumption. Example: Implementing programs in grocery stores and restaurants to donate unsold food to food banks or using imperfect produce in meal preparations.
Sustainable Packaging:
Using materials that are recyclable, biodegradable, or reusable to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. Example: Using compostable packaging for food products or implementing bulk buying programs to minimize packaging waste.
Educating on Plant-Based Diets:
Discussing consumption of more plant-based foods, which potentially require fewer resources and produce less greenhouse gas emissions than meat and dairy production. Example: Developing and marketing appealing plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products.
Supporting Local and Seasonal Foods:
Discussing the purchase and consumption of locally grown and seasonally available foods to support local economies and reduce transportation emissions. Example: Farm-to-table restaurants or food brands that source ingredients directly from nearby farms and change their menus and offerings based on seasonal availability.
Community and Urban Agriculture:
Discussing the development of local gardens and farms in urban and suburban areas to reduce food deserts and promote community involvement in food production. Example: Community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs where consumers buy shares of a local farm's harvest.
Implementing Sustainability into Nutrition and Food Service
Katy Maher is a registered dietitian in food service with a focus on food sustainability. She explains:
“I work in food service management so my role is primarily serving as a liaison between students and the dining program as it relates to allergies and other dietary needs. However, our company as a whole has a huge commitment to sustainability. A big portion of my job is helping to make sure we are meeting our sustainability goals. I complete menu reviews for all our campus locations, and in these reviews, I make sure we are presenting plant-forward dishes and meeting our wellness commitments - both of which fit into our sustainability goals. Other sustainability projects I drive include our food recovery program and reusable to-go container program.”
Implementing Sustainability into Menu planning
Emily Niswanger, registered dietitian and founder of Anywhere Nutrition, encourages everyone to “not be afraid to create your own thing!”
“I run a seasonal-based meal plan membership. It's organized by season and promotes CSA shares, buying directly from the farmer, shopping locally at farmer's markets, etc. I help people prevent food waste by only buying what they need and using up what they have. I also help people get connected with local farmers to buy direct. I’ve been able to do Instagram takeovers with our local farmer's markets to share what I do too.”
