What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?
Initially I was interested in diabetes and attracted to the idea of nutrition as a key part of the treatment plan. I came to realize that nutrition counseling was not where my passion was but working in the food industry has reinforced this idea - food is powerful!
Company you are with now?
Tyson Foods, Inc. I've been with the company for over 10 years!

A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?
I'm responsible for creating and reviewing nutrition facts panels for packages, evaluating products for relevant nutrition claims, and working closely with our regulatory and law teams to ensure nutrition related communications are substantiated in science and facts!
My role requires a working knowledge of federal regulations for FDA and USDA regulated products, and my team helps track emerging nutrition policy initiatives. A "typical" day could include creating nutrition facts panels for new products, reviewing ad copy for accuracy of claims or nutrition related communication, answering consumer questions related to nutrition or allergens and sensitive ingredients, generating nutrition facts for recipes that go on our retail websites, and attending project management meetings.
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
I applied! I honestly applied for my current job to learn more about the position. I was very curious what a dietitian at Tyson would do and was in a clinical management position that didn't fit with my skills or interests any longer. I also heard about the position through our local dietetics association - that connection was key to my career path!
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
I was born with a love for organizing and writing. Those come naturally, bring me lots of joy, and are used daily in my role today! I've learned along the way that our skills are transferable in so many roles as dietitians. One skill I've chosen to focus on is public speaking. I joined Toastmasters several years ago and still use those skills today.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Two things!
- Each job can teach you things about yourself, your likes and your dislikes. Take note of the ones that you enjoy most and focus on ways to improve your skills in those areas.
- Build a mindful network! Join your local dietetic association, volunteer with a DPG, join a mentor circle - focus on organizations and people that will help you do your job better or grow your career.
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
If Tyson could pay me with unlimited travel, that would be amazing. I love to see the world and have a goal to see all 50 states before I turn 50. I have seen 35 states so far!
