Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?
While “no two days are the same,” generally my work consists of planning the logistics of various programs and aligning with stakeholders on the stories we are telling. There are a fair amount of video calls with clients and constant chat messaging internally to make this possible and keep projects moving forward. We are a communications agency after all! I’m typically (although not exclusively) planning virtual events around telling a nutrition story.
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
Networking! I was curious and determined to find a non-traditional path in dietetics and this led me to reaching out and making connections with a lot of dietitians. People often think of networking as “how can you advance my career?” but it should really be about creating and maintaining organic relationships first, and then seeing where that takes you both.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
I think my thirst for knowledge and constant need for self-improvement were key drivers in getting me to where I am today. Most of everything else I’ve had to learn along the way – from writing and communications skills to time management and organizational skills. Some people are born with these skills, but they can also be learned.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Don’t give up! The perfect job is out there for you, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find it tomorrow. Stay curious and keep making connections with people. Reach out to people who have interesting jobs and ask them how they got there. And, if after searching you can’t find your ideal job, create it yourself.
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what
would it be?
Travel miles!
