A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?
On Monday I have meetings with business clients. On Tuesday I focus on marketing. Wednesday’s focus is financial...with everything in between! I do all the oversight for my private practice (7 RDNs) and my business consulting (training and consulting on RDN insurance billing/business for individual RDNs and corporations). I'm also a co-founder for Nutrition Practice Network, an online membership hub for all things private practice. Once a month, I meet with my mastermind group, a collection of private practice RDNs. I'm usually working on a few upcoming presentations for local, state and national organizations.
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
I always did some sort of consulting and private practice--health fairs, menu consulting, presentations. Then, the small town I lived in needed a RDN to provide pre-bariatric counseling. I offered private pay consulting, and decided to accept insurance. We incorporated in 2015 and I've since had many years of growth and learning, especially about insurance billing. I served as the Chair of the Nutrition Services Payment Committee with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Volunteering has been a great part of my experience, and I love to continue to help our profession excel.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
I love rules, so I guess that's why I enjoy working with insurances! Being outgoing has always been a skill, but I had to learn how to apply it to business. I'm always learning, especially from my mastermind group, which offers such different perspectives on private practice and life.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Figure out what you like to do, what you want to do, where you want to go, then only do the things that move you toward those goals.
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
Time, for sure. Not sure if that counts? I guess if it was a tangible thing, tennis lessons :)
