Dietetic Career Spotlight on Susan Mitchell, Host of the podcast BreakingDownNutrition

I’ve had the luxury of working with Susan Mitchell, PhD, RDN, LDN, FAND, on the Nutrition Entrepreneur’s Dietetic Practice Group Executive Board. She’s an amazing and inspiring RDN who lifts people up and encourages our professional growth. I’m excited to learn more about her career path, day-to-day routine, and successful business. – Sarah

What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics? While I was in college trying to find my major and calling, my Dad went to see a dietitian for elevated cholesterol. He told me all about his visit which fascinated me and how The University of Tennessee had one of the best dietetic programs in the country. I checked it out and the rest is history.

Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you: What I love about my work is that no day is the same. The day might include a Skype call with a business client in the US or another country followed by writing a script for podcast or video production, meeting with my video team, or giving a presentation for continuing education.

How did you get your current job in dietetics? I started my business over 20 years ago and it has evolved.

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way? Hmm, I am outgoing by nature and enjoy speaking and working in the media. My media, writing and speaking skills have been sharpened along the way.

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you? Dream your dream and never give up. Success is a journey with lots of twists and turns along the way that make it more interesting.

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be? Probably clothes as I’ve always been interested in fashion.
