She has helped shape our industry through her media-savvy communications skills and continues to share her passion for food, nutrition, and health with the public. Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you? I don’t have a typical day as Monday can be very different than Wednesday, which also differs from Friday.

However, an ideal “typical” office day would be something like this:

  • Wake at or after 6AM. Move my body. Have tea- either a chai or matcha latte.
  • I’m most productive in the mornings. This is when I work to meet client messaging and publication deadlines, write blog posts, and test and photograph recipes.
  • I take lunch around 1p. I may have an egg and veggie scramble with fruit or toast or I’ll eat whatever I’m making for the blog.
  • I schedule calls, media interviews, and meetings in the afternoons and fill the time with anything left from the morning. I close the day by feeding and walking my dog, Biscuit. Then it’s time for dinner – which is usually around 7p.

Other days might include a full day creating videos or recipe testing complete with food styling and photography or I might be offsite doing a cooking demo, group presentation, or TV segment.

How did you get your current job in dietetics? Two weeks after I got laid off from a dream job years ago, I created an LLC. That LLC became a side business until I went full time in it again April 2012. My last full-time job was managing the nutrition program for CDC employees. I loved it there but left to pursue the culinary and communications consultancy I run today.

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way? I was born with the ability to teach and engage a room with ease. I was also born with the ability to analyze. I think I do it in my sleep.

I’ve learned to be imaginative. Not everything is black and white. An example is how I’ve learned food styling and photography along the way.

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you? Don’t be afraid to take a chance. Trying something new or different, if it’s something you are passionate about, you can excel and be able to make a living doing what you love!

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be? Lifetime, unlimited complimentary travel and lodging.
