Dietetic Career Spotlight on Jodi Danen, Create Kids Club, Lunch Bites Lunch Box Note Cards
What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics? Growing up, homemade healthy meals and snacks were a staple in my home. My younger sister was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic at age 11 which also influenced the way I saw food and health.
With this interest in food and nutrition, I took an intro to nutrition class sophomore year of college and I found it to be the most interesting class I ever took. This lead me to talk with the professor, who was a registered dietitian, and the next year, I was accepted into a coordinated dietetics program.

Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you? Every day is a bit different, but I start most mornings early, before the rest of my family wakes. I take advantage of the quite house to start checking email, following up on social media, and get my day planned. I have 2 elementary aged children who keep me busy, and it can be distracting working from home, playing the role of stay at home mom as well, so I try to take advantage of this time.
I have many hats to wear running and building my business, along with freelance writing jobs. Some days I focus on recipe development, cooking, food photography, and filming recipe videos. Other days are spend editing, writing, and pitching companies. I schedule time to market Lunch Bites along with Create Kids Club and time for continuing my education on all these topics. Networking is important along with a strong social media presence so time is spent there as well.
How did you get your current job in dietetics? I have been a dietitian for 16 years now, and my career has been varied. I started in dialysis, which I loved, but decided to stay home with my children when my second child was born. I started weight management counseling online very part time during that period. I also wrote and taught a children’s cooking program.
As my own kids entered school, I took a job as the food service director at their elementary school and helped redo the lunch program. After a few years, I was looking for a change and decided to take the leap and start my own business. I have never been happier!
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way? I was born with a love for all things food, I am passionate about things I’m interested in and like to make goals for myself and work hard to achieve them. On the other hand, I am not a technical person, so I had to learn a bit of coding, a bit of computer programing, learn all about marketing and how to run and manage a business.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you? Be prepared to work harder, and more hours, than you ever have before. There is no end of the work day, you always have work sitting there over your shoulder. The secret is that it doesn’t feel like work because it’s something I love to do and I enjoy (almost!) every part of the job.
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be? Travel. I love visiting new cities and countries, and could travel to new destinations forever.
