What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics? My mom went to nursing school when I was in high school. I found myself reading her entire Introduction to Nutrition text book when she was taking that class. I did not know of the profession at that time and went on to college and majored in Psychology and then changed to Elementary Education after one year. After three years of college I decided that I did not want to be a school teacher and decided to take one semester off to really think about what I wanted as a career. After talking over different careers with my family it was my brother who recommended the major of nutrition and then I looked it up and low and behold there was a major for Nutrition and Dietetics at a nearby university. I applied and got into the school and I have never looked back. I loved every class I took and have loved by job ever since.

Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you? I work from home now after being in a doctor’s office setting or hospital setting for almost 20 years. I love being at home and making my own schedule. My position is flexible and I have a great manager and team that I work with. We have virtual meetings each week with the other Certified Diabetes Educators around the country and even though none of us are in an office together we have built strong relationships thanks to our caring CEO and managers. Some healthcare providers may ask is virtual coaching is as helpful to our patients and I can say first hand that it is. I have helped patients to figure out how to afford their medications through pharmaceutical programs or what they may need from their doctor to get their medication covered by their insurance. I have helped patients that may be taking their medications incorrectly or storing it incorrectly. As well as answering questions about their meal planning goals or exercise goals. The patients on the phone are so appreciative of the calls I can hear their gratitude in the voices every day!
How did you get your current job in dietetics? I was at work one day speaking with another RD that happen to work for a pharmaceutical company and she told me about this job that you get to work from home and counsel patients with diabetes virtually. I applied and got the job. I was very moved by our CEO’s personal journey with diabetes as well and I thought it was a great fit.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way? I believe I was born with empathy and kindness. From my teens I’ve always been interested in psychology and counseling. What I have learned along the way is how to really listen to someone and pay attention. You gain trust much quicker with patients which makes for much more productive visits and relationships.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you? Listen to your inner voice. If you are in a job that you don’t enjoy, look at why that may be. See if there are things that you could change if not then maybe it’s time to move on or maybe you can change and grow in that same position. If you are happy and feel appreciated, you will go far!
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be? Yoga/meditation classes, workout classes, airline miles.
