The duties/responsibilities of the Registered Dietician will include but are not limited to:
Serve as the specialist in the area of pediatric outpatient nutritional care, providing counseling services to patients with disease processes that require nutritional management and impact on nutritional status.

Develop assessment techniques and education protocols and programs that are necessary for providing comprehensive nutritional care for pediatric outpatients who may have complex nutritional and/or psychosocial problems that impact on adherence to prescribed dietary regimens.

Provide professional guidance and education in nutritional management and diet counseling of pediatric outpatients to medical residents, interns, allied health professionals, dietetic students, and entry-level dietitians.

Serve on multidisciplinary treatment team (s) composed of physicians, nurses, social workers, and other allied health team members.

Review the medical record and interact or consult with team members in planning and implementing nutritional care processes compatible with the overall team treatment plan.

Provide diet counseling and nutrition care services to pediatric outpatients whose disorders/diseases require complex dietary management.

Use unique approaches to achieve compliance with patients that are not located in a controlled medical center environment.

Conduct in-depth diet history with patients and/or caregivers regarding food habits, preferences, ethnic or cultural background, economic status, physical limitations, and lifestyle habits which may impact on food intake or ability to adhere to nutritional care plan.

Review medical records and interview patients to evaluate anthropometric data, laboratory parameters, drug-nutrient interactions, and diet counseling needs.

Use knowledge of etiology and pathophysiology of multiple disease states, knowledge of digestion and metabolism of nutrients, and assessment of nutritional status to develop a realistic individualized dietary plan for the patient.

Implement appropriate dietary regimes for individual outpatients/family/caregivers upon consult from physician or nurse practitioner.

Alter diet prescriptions in consultation with physician, when indicated.

Record results of nutritional assessments, diet counseling, and progress on follow-up visits in the medical record.

Coordinate all Pediatric Dietetic patient education activities for outpatient use, including review and revision of diet instruction materials, identifying need for additional materials, and coordinating development of new materials.

Provide and participate in educational programs such as medical conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Provide support, expertise, and service as a consultant to other dietitians and health team members regarding diet counseling and nutritional management of pediatric outpatients.

Assume an active role in applied nutritional research and clinical study activities, including collecting scientific data, preparing and publishing materials.

Participate in investigative studies to improve nutritional care delivery to patients; participate in the development of programs that further the goals of the service.

Systematically monitor effectiveness of practice through client database and outcomes evaluation. Synthesize and use the results of these evaluations to make or recommend changes including policy, procedure or protocol documentation.

Perform interpretation of laboratory data.

Perform evaluation of diet history, 24-hour recall, and food frequency data.

Perform modification in fiber, consistency, calories, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and minerals.

Provide alternate dietary plans to account for food allergy, food intolerance, or for food preferences such as vegetarianism.

Incorporate into dietary plans: nutritional factors associated with obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiac, gastrointestinal, hepatic, hypertension, metabolic, endocrine, renal, surgery, neurologic, pulmonary, malabsorption, and infection; all life cycle phases (e.g., pregnancy, lactation, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics); disease prevention of palliation (e.g., dental caries, oral health, weight control, risk factor intervention, oncology, abnormalities of nutrient metabolism, drug-nutrient, and diet-drug interactions, substance abuse, and feeding problems); and nutritional factors associated with stress, deficiency states, immunologic implication, megavitamin supplementation.

A minimum of 1year full time experience as a dietitian within the preceding 3 years.

Provide two letters of recommendation written within the last two years attesting to the HCWâs clinical skills.

Possess either:

A Baccalaureate degree and completion of curriculum requirements of a Dietitian Program from a school accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics (ACEND);


Possess a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics (ACEND).

Completion of a post- Baccalaureate degree Dietetic Internship Program of supervised practice (for a minimum of 900 hours) accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics (ACEND).

Possess and maintain a current registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association).

Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted license/certification/registration to practice as a Registered Dietitian (RD) in any one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Must be able to travel to the Branch Health Clinics at Indian Head, MD and Dalghren, VA as required.
