Job Description and Requirements

The NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), in collaboration with its partners, protects the health and safety of all North Carolinians and provides essential human services.

As a part of DHHS, the Division of Public Health is made of a several sections servicing the citizens of North Carolina. The Nutrition Service Branch is a part of the Women and Children's Health Section within Public Health. Activities of the Nutrition Services Branch promote sound nutrition habits among infants, children and women in their child-bearing years. Branch staff work with county, state and private agencies to improve health status by reducing the incidence of nutritional risk factors, improving pregnancy outcomes, and hastening recovery from illness and injury through the provision of technical assistance, education and supplemental foods.

The primary purpose of this position develops, implement, interpret and evaluate policies, procedures and implementation guidance in nutrition assessment and medical/nutritional eligibility for the WIC program. Maintains and updates the nutrition assessment and medical/nutrition eligibility for the WIC program component of the WIC Program Policy Manual, and the annual State WIC Plan.

Must have experience in:

Normal and therapeutic nutrition and its relationship with growth, chronic disease, principles and practice of behavior change, nutrition needs across the lifespan with a special focus on women and children.
Interpreting, understanding and translating research findings into educational information, communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing, and to prepare and present educational training materials to professionals and lay groups.
Problem solving techniques
Analyzing, interpreting, recommending and implementing policy and procedures guidelines.
Mastery of the process and practice of consultation.
Well-developed skills in education/training techniques as applied to adult education and various group process techniques.

Management Preferences
Master's degree in nutrition or public health with three of program administration or supervisory experience. Experience in the delivery of public health services, specially the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

Professional Credentials Required
Registered Dietitian (RD)/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Physical Requirements
Position is office based with statewide travel required.
