Job Description and Requirements
The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of full-time and part-time, non-tenure track lecturer positions (including summer sessions) to teach courses in Nutritional Science and related topics. Screening of applicants will begin in fall 2017 and is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from teaching 1 to 10 units.
We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach/co-teach small, medium, or large lecture and/or laboratory courses. Possible courses for instruction include Medical Nutrition Therapy, Food Science, Food System Organization & Management, Community Nutrition, Human Food Practices, Food and Culture, Introduction to Food, Introduction to Nutritional Sciences, and others. A successful applicant need not be proficient in the subject matter of all these courses, but should be proficient in more than one topic. Those with a background in food science and food service management are highly encouraged to apply.
General Duties - The primary responsibilities for NST Lecturer positions include:
â¢ Delivering lectures and holding office hours
â¢ Planning and preparing lessons; researching and developing new topics, teaching materials and online resources
â¢ Supervising Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs), if applicable
â¢ Mentoring students in the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and contributing to departmental and program activities
â¢ Management of laboratory space, if teaching a course with a lab
â¢ Developing exams and projects and assigning grades
â¢ Maintaining accurate records and monitoring students' progress, as well as addressing any special student needs
â¢ Maintaining knowledge of, and implementing, college policies
Qualifications: A Masterâs degree or equivalent degree in dietetics, nutrition, food service, public health, or a related field by the time of application. 3 years of professional experience in dietetics practice by time of application.
Additional Qualifications: For Food Service Management instructors, the applicant should have the ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification.
Preferred Qualifications: Five years or more of professional experience in dietetics practice. Registered dietitians with demonstrated ability to teach professional courses in the DPD curriculum. Leadership experience and demonstrated commitment to the profession of dietetics.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (starting annual, full-time salary is $52,099). Some credit will be given to prior college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer session teaching).
