Breastfeeding Peer Counselor / WIC Nutrition Assistant
(City Job Classification: Community Health Worker)
Salary: $4,655.00 - $5,121.00 Monthly
(Plus generous benefits package)

The City of Berkeley is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team in the Women Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program of the Health, Housing and Community Services Department. This position will serve as the programâs Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) / WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA). The BFPC/WNA provides breastfeeding education and support to WIC prenatal and postpartum mothers, at the clinic, at clientsâ homes, or on the phone. The position assists with facilitation of group classes and maintains supplies of breastfeeding educational materials, incentive items, pumps, pump kits, and other lactation support devices. The BFPC/WNA answers phone calls, schedules appointments, screens applicants for eligibility for the WIC program, greets WIC families and routes them according to appointment types. The BFPC/WNA also provides nutrition education and counseling to WIC participants in groups or individual settings, and maintains organized and accurate participant records.

The successful candidate is enthusiastic and passionate about working with families with young children. The candidate will have knowledge of basic nutrition in pregnancy, postpartum, infancy and childhood. Candidate will possess techniques and principles of interviewing and counseling clients on nutrition and breastfeeding, and be able to respond sensitively and effectively to the needs of people from a variety of minority groups and cultures. The successful candidate will have exceptional time management and organizational skills, as well as be able to prepare accurate and complete documentation and reports. The candidate will be able to learn and apply WIC policies and procedures.

To qualify, you must possess the equivalent to graduation from high school.

Experience working with the WIC program and bilingual skills desirable.
