A cover letter is an introduction to your story. The right cover letter will grab the attention of the employer and invite the employer to review your resume. This will set the tone, feel, and layout of your job application. What you say in a cover letter needs to be impressive, captivating, purposeful, and effective. The best cover letters have an introduction, highlight a few of your skills, and explain your purpose for writing.
Here are 5 tips on how to write an eye-catching cover letter.
- Short and Sweet. Make the cover letter one page. Be clear, concise, and consistent with your words.
- Show some personality while maintaining a professional demeanor. Refrain from using slang words. Use actions verbs which convey confidence, enthusiasm, and respect.
- Customize the cover letter to highlight a few of your skills or experiences which pertain to the organization and job you are applying for.
- Open with a paragraph stating why you are writing. The first paragraph should also give an idea of who you are. Paragraph #2 and #3 are meant to highlight your experience as related to the position and explain how you will be an asset to the organization. The final paragraph is a call for action. Politely request an interview, describe additional information included such as the resume, portfolio, writing sample, etc, and say thank you to the reader for taking his time and consideration for the position.
- Use proper business letter formatting with font that is easy to read. Make sure to spell check your work. Proofread the cover letter carefully before sending it off. Checking your work is important to prevent errors which can be an instant turn-off.
