Sarah Koszyk, MA, RD: What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?
Pamela Malo, MHS, RD, KYT: I’m not sure if I picked nutrition or it picked me! When I started out on my career path, I had no idea where it would lead me. I knew I liked working with people, and helping those who wanted to improve their health and nutrition seemed like a wonderful thing. So far it has proven to be exactly that!

A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?
I love rituals, especially in the morning to begin my day. My current morning ritual involves a short yoga routine, 15 minutes of meditation, and journaling to clear my head. After I eat breakfast and shower, I start in on my three MITs (most important tasks) for the day. I will myself, ‘What would feel amazing to accomplish today?’ and think about how much time I have and what is realistic. (That’s the hard part!). My afternoons involve teaching yoga, working with clients and catching up on email. On an ideal day, I won’t open my inbox until noon but that is not always possible. In the evening I either stay home and make dinner, volunteer at my local food coop, or head out and teach a group nutrition classes.
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
I just decided to go for it! Prior to starting my private practice, I was doing research for the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Through 5,000 interviews I was able to witness not only what America eats, but the complicated relationship people have with what they eat. I wanted to offer a whole-person approach to wellness that went beyond just their plate- a full life approach to health and wellness. So I began my private practice that combines everything I know as a dietitian, yoga instructor and a coach, as well as what I learned through my own life journey.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
As a Taurus, I can say I was likely born reliable, creative and stubborn! What I have learned along the way is how to speak in public, how to manage my time and energy, and how to “get out of my head” and into my body.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Follow your heart! Surround yourself with people who uplift your spirits, and who will support you no matter what. (If you don’t know what makes your heart sing, connect with me! I love helping people discover it.)
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
Superpowers! I would love the ability to speak any language at a given moment, and to travel through time.
