Dietetic Career Spotlight: Elizabeth Jarrard, RD, LDN
By SARAH KOSZYK, MA RDN on AUGUST 14, 2012
Meet Elizabeth Jarrard, specializing in eating disorders and social media, who’s found her niche in communicating to the masses as a freelance social media expert.
What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?
My love of math and sciences started me on the path to become a research biologist, but I quickly realized I would much rather be spending my day talking with and changing people’s lives on a one-to-one basis, rather than living behind a microscope. Add to that a love of food and voila- a dietitian is born!

Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you.
Everyday is different! It’s a balance of seeing clients, mostly for weight management and eating disorders, and living my online life. I blog, tweet, post up a storm not only for myself but for several social media clients of mine. I love both my role as a nutrition expert and as a communication expert!
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
Networking, finding phenomenal mentors, and being available to opportunities.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
My parents raised my to be very determined, disciplined and independent. My role as a facilitator and communicator was something I’ve learned along the way. Patience is a virtue I continue to work on.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
To keep your head up, and look on the bright side of everything. Whatever is meant to be will be. (I repeat these things to myself daily).
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
Fresh local fruit and veggies!
