Meet Nicole Holovach who found her corporate dream job through blogging, networking, and diligence. – Sarah
What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?:
I like to eat! Plus I was an athlete in high school and college and I was intrigued by food’s effect on the body.
Your Job Title?
Registered Dietitian and Corporate Wellness Manager
Company you are with now?
Nova Medical Group, an integrative primary care practice with four locations in Northern Virginia.
A typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?
I see patients for initial consultations and follow-up appointments. In my down time at work, I research patient issues, create and print patient handouts, and plan wellness activities for the staff of Nova Medical Group. I try to cook and be active outdoors or take a yoga class in the evenings. I also blog, freelance write, and counsel patients via Skype, so some nights, you’ll find me at home on my laptop!
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
I went to the integrative nutrition conference “Food as Medicine” for personal interest in 2009. I was working in nutrition policy at the time, but integrative nutrition and functional medicine were a huge passion. After the conference, I started my blog and eventually started nutrition counseling on the side. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do – there aren’t many opportunities for outpatient nutrition counseling, especially somewhere that focuses on integrative health! But I saw Nova Medical Group’s job posting and immediately applied. They loved that I had attended “Food as Medicine” and that I blogged about integrative nutrition, and the rest is history!
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
Empathy and creativity feel natural to me. I’ve always been a good writer and researcher, and a good listener. I’m learning how to be a better counselor along the way!
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Follow your passion! I know that’s trite, but I would not be where I am today if I didn’t read, study, network, and try to follow my dreams outside of my 40-hour a week day job.
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
Meat, fruits, and veggies from the farmers’ market!
