SARAH KOSZYK, RD: What attracted you to the field of nutrition and dietetics?
KATI MORA, MS, RD: I’ve always been interested in the idea of being your best self. In college, I was always reading health and wellness magazines and thought it would be so much fun to talk about food for a living. I didn’t realize there was a whole career based on that principle, but once I did there was no looking back.
Your Job Title?
I have a couple of different job titles these days. I’m the co-owner of Around the Plate, LLC, a nutrition-based company that provides individuals with the tools and resources they need to live healthy and eat happy. I’m also the Wellness Advocate for Kellogg’s FiberPlus brands.
Company you are with now?
Biggs|Gilmore (the public relations firm I work for as the Kellogg’s FiberPlus Wellness Advocate) and Around the Plate, LLC
Describe a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you.
A typical day for me probably isn’t that typical for most dietitians. The first thing I do in the morning is check my email and all the social media spaces in which I interact on behalf of Kellogg’s FiberPlus and Around the Plate. Then, once my two little boys wake up, I help get the ready for school and send them on their way with their dad. Then I spend some time developing content on behalf of Kellogg’s FiberPlus to share on blogs and forums that relate to fiber and the importance of it in your diet. After that I spend some time writing articles for Around the Plate. Once I have lunch, I then head off to a local coffee shop to schedule events for thePlate Community, a food and nutrition blog network that we run on Around the Plate. The rest of my day involves checking Facebook pages, reading recent nutrition articles, and keeping up on what’s happening in the world of food both on- and off-line.
How did you get your current job in dietetics?
My business, Around the Plate, LLC was launched in 2009 in an effort to provide realistic and accurate nutrition information to the public. There are so many websites that claim to provide such things, but once you visit them, you quickly realize that most fall short. We also really wanted to highlight the nutritional knowledge of dietitians and position them as the true nutrition experts. My job as the Kellogg’s FiberPlus Wellness Advocate came about
because of the work I did with Around the Plate. They really liked what I was doing online and thought I would be a good fit for what they were envisioning with this position.
What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
The only skill that I think comes naturally to me is my persistence. I find that most things don’t necessarily come easy, but as long as I never give up and keep working towards my goals, I typically meet them and succeed at what I’m doing. Through this process I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned the importance of working with other nutrition and health professionals and I’ve also learned how to be more confident in expertise. Both of these skills have allowed me to jump into many new opportunities that have not only been beneficial for my career, but have allowed me to really have fun every single day.
What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Do what makes you happy. If you enjoy what you do on a daily basis, it won’t seem like work and your attitude will be contagious. In my experience, people want to be where the fun is. Make you day fun and you’ll see that not only do you enjoy the day more, but the people you come into contact with will too.
If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
If everyone made even just one small change towards better health because of an article I wrote or a conversation that we have had, I would be happy. After all, that’s what it’s all about. Helping people make positive steps in the right direction towards living healthy and eating happy.
